connection problems

Firstly : Hello people This is my first ever post. I dipped into an Instaunlagged game earlier today and the server provider suggested I post my query here.

I'm on 56k dial up AOL provider Arena Gold edition and Pentium4 2.5GHz. Connecting from Scotland - UK.

I'm having HUGE connection woes. including CD Key errors (I'll check other threads for this) just sitting there in 'Awaiting Gamestate' and protocol errors for servers I could play before (I'll need a switcher?) and I can't spec on some servers as it says I need to update my punkbuster?

I ran Quake III itself quite successfully before and I downloaded 1.32 point release. It wasn't great at connecting thru the game or Gamespy. I then installed Team Arena over that and I've recently found out this was the wrong thing to do as it overwrote the newer version. So now I've reinstalled 1.32. I've just downloaded Gamespy 3D but someone at your server suggested the ASE and said a CD Key error patch was available.

awwww, Wolfie, we've all had 56k at one time or another... a lot of our members started out with it....
AOL, man, I am so sorry..... ISP sucks for gaming...
OK, punkbuster... it is an anti-cheat software included with 1.32. It scans peoples files against the server to insure they are not cheating. There are a ton of ways to cheat, but we won't get into that right now...
Now... if you go to a server that has it "enabled", and yours is out of date... it throws you into spec mode until it downloads all of the updates... at 56k, might as well grab a sandwich, you are in for the long haul.
I always give the clan members something called PBweb exe. It is an automatic updater for punk. You just put it in your PB folder, which resides in your Quake3 folder. When you double click it, it updates all of your punkbuster files so that you are never out of date. I suggest doing it about once a week. So, here's the link:

As for the rest of your woes... one step at a time. One of our Admins, NastySnowman, was just upgraded from 56k, so, Snowy, if you see this, throw in some goodies. Maybe, if you wish Wolfie, email me, and I will forward, answer, tweak you in anyway I can...take care.

Just those small snippets can really put you in the picture. I ain't an ID game newbie... but at 56k you can imagine my online knowledge isn't huge.

However I 'have' been trying and I've been reading up. My love for Quake III is as strong as ever and if anyone else feels the need to reply to this thread I'll be delighted.

As for AOL... yes...avoid... This was hinted at before but without boring everyone I can't sort that rite now.

Go connect to a server with punkbuster ENABLED...play the game, that's all...And if you being forced to specmode then typ in this in your console: /pb_sv_enable and: /pb_sv_update... You don't need pbweb.exe or any other kind of program... First install q3, then the add-ons, and THEN the newest patch for q3...

Don't know if you tried this already, but it's solved most of my problems. It's a link to Activision Support. Just click on "Find Answers" and do a search for your problem. Those darn CD Key errors are a pain!!

Jeffers gone into your PB problem, so thats that job done.
The "CD Key Patch" i mentioned, is a simple batch file that you can use to launch the game when connecting from the ASE, worked wonders with my CDKey errors.

Open up a new notepad file and copy the following lines into it:

shift

quake3.exe %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6 %7 %8 %9
exit

save this file as q3boot.bat in your Quake III Arena directory. Next load up ASE and go to Tools - Options, on the games tab select q3. On Program Location, click browse and change to files of type Batch Files, browse to your q3boot.bat file and ok. Hope this helps you out
Glad you downloaded ASE, my plan to rid the world of Gamespy and it's sucky pop-up ads, and the poop ingame browser is slowly coming together.... MUHAHAHAHA

Ummm, ignore Phoenix... it sounds like he enjoys updating while waiting to play. Myself, I preferred to do it while I was busy doing other things... when I wanted to play, I wanted to play now! But, it's a pesonal choice. As for me, I don't enjoy watching people do something that I really wanted to do, but I'm stuck there watching with my thumb up my ass.......

Phoenix, do you have a clue what you are talking about!?! Try the PBweb "before" you make a statement that in game is faster.....how can it be? You are connected to a server... sending- recieving information, then you are trying to connect to PB master server to update info.... at a 56k connection.... are you starting to see the light here? ooooh, makes sense, don't it... sheesh, rookies....

In answer to your question captain, if you follow the instructions above, it may help you with any cdkey errors you get when connecting from the eye.

I do believe it was Neo who first supplied us with this bit of knowledge... ALL HAIL NEO! hehe
