Good morning,
I'm not trying to beat a dead horse and perhaps this is beyond improvement...
Here is what I have going on...
I have upped my DSL speed to 7Mb from 1.5 Mb effective today however, my pings are about the same as before on all three servers as the 1.5 Mb connection was before. I am connected directly into the DSL modem w/cat5 and the only other variable I can minipulate would be the phone lines to the service box on the house.
Currently @ 7Mb:
New York, NY ~ 2450 mi D/L 4162 kb/s U/L 749 kb/s Latency 128 ms
London ~ 4900 mi D/L 2701 kb/s U/L 756 kb/s Latency 191 ms
I know Cable would fix my problem but $79.00 per month is too rich for me...
Does anyone have any thoughts on this? If so I would appreciate any feed back.
Thanks,
Slippery Snee

Hey Snee-Man-
Your question is probably best directed toward an admin type like Snowy, Klutzy or Hoody. I remember Snowy saying something about trying to access the servers through All Seeing Eye or maybe GameSpy? Have you tried that? I have to tell you, for DSL your ping is pretty good. I know that doesn't help the connectivity issue but.....My only other suggestion is to get some side work as a male prostitute. It worked for Fred Garvin.
I think my main issue is that I have to shake hands with Portland Oregon which is 100 miles east over the Coast Range and then from there to the Nasty's ... ;o)~
Bottom line...Oregon's phone lines are hosed!
Anyway, I will press on and play when playable as I enjoy all the people and I am having too much fun to let this issue get to me.
I can shed some light on this . I'm currently earning my diploma in network engineering, a couple more years to go but I know some various factors that affect ping.
Upping your bandwidth capabilities wont affect ping much, since you cant change the amount of time it takes from a packet to arrive from point A to point B. Sure you can download 7 megs per second now at once, but I havent seen any public website/server that allows such amounts of bandwidth to be transferred to one single client.
your ping is affected by how much time it takes for your computer to encode the data into an internet packet, push it up onto the wire in an electrical signal, time it takes for said electral signal to reach its destination, once at the destination the computer recieving needs to turn it from electrical signals back into binary/machine language, decrypt the packet to get at the original data and last but not least process said data.
Now DSL uses a form of compression to send data at higher speeds on the wire and leaves about 2% of your phone line avaliable so you can make a call at the same time. Sadly this compression step takes a bit more time, hence your ping rate goes up.
Sadly increasing your DSL bandwidth will allow your line to handle MORE at once, but it doesnt increase the speed at which these things travel. If you really want to increase your ping rate then a low end cable line will be better for you since it doesnt have this added compression step which is what really eats away at your ping.
The only other thing you can do is get closer to the server so that your game packets doesnt have to travel as far.
Sorry to burst the bubble but this is how things work in data transfer between remote locations in a simplified form, and there really is no way to decrease your ping rate.
you may be able to make some config changes in q3 that may help make ur ping a lil more barable, that would be covered in another section on the forum, now where's Jeff at with a shortcut to it, or would klutz be the wise one to pint someone into the right section so as not to go off topic elsewhere:)

Hi...
I appreciate your input Ryan and I now understand a great deal more by what you have so kindly taken the time to explain. The upgrade in connection speed was stemmed by the frequent disconnects to the server(s) with heavy spikes and while inquiring with the DSL wizards about this problem I was able to upgrade to the maximum available speed for $12.00 less than what I was paying before and I had hoped (Pipe dream) that it would help stabalize my connection and help my ping.
Cable here is outragous per month but perhaps someday I'll be able to get it. (I might be eating oatmeal by then though) ;o)
Thank you again Ryan....
I am very appreciative for time and wisdom... I'm learning...
;D

Snee-
Cable is worth the $ if you can swing it. I pay about $130-140 per month but that includes hi-def TV, 2 boxes and speedy internet. Maybe I'm getting hosed but I like having that stuff.
Snow helped me with some settings this morning, mine were set at default on his server and it seemed to help out a great deal...
I would love to switch to cable, perhaps this summer when jobs pick up and stay steady... I am booking several jobs for the fair weather and I may be remodeling three condo interiors ($12,000 each) so if the big bucks come my way I will invest in both cable and a higher end PC.
I'm still having a great time with all you Nastys....

Very interesting... this is making me want to get cable sooner than later... but i will check out some of the suggestions for the time being and continue to have fun....
Thank you Saw
