If anyone has a way with laptops, PM me, email me or just reply to this. I have an HP Pavilion that I can't get to boot. My last attempt to boot from the install CD led me to reformatting the HD (long version) and got an error message that said something about not being able to reformat because of a HD error.
I have had problems of late bringing the machine out of hibernation. It would get 80% through the startup and then give me an error message that I had to destroy the recovery data and start over (reboot).

I'm sorry can't help you. I have about the same problem. Though I can boot, but lappy works fine for about 15 minutes or so and then starts to make funny sounds. Now I know the problem is the harddisk so I had the chance to back (almost) everything up. But I'm afraid I will have to replace the harddisk. Luckily it's all within the warranty, so.. I hope you will get yours fixed too. GL!

I'm not sure if this is any help Saw, but my laptop tells me my hard disk is missing sometimes when i try to boot. I researched the problems and apparently this is caused by a week bios battery.
I don't know if that has anything to do with your prob, but I figured I put in my two cents.

You are bringing it to my house? You have a failing hd by the sounds of it. If it got past the boot, and was able to to try and format, you have corrupt sectors on your disk.
What model/make is it?
