Another thing that comes to mind. Various services use svchost.exe processes on your system (you'll probably have about 5 or 6) that run in Windows. Now, if you task manager it, and try shutting things down, one by one, until you find out which process it "might" be, you should find it. You might crash your system a bunch, and might get really mad, but it can be done. I would try disconnecting the cd/dvd drive first, just to see if it is for some reason. Gimp, I wish you were in the USA, I LOVE these type of problems. It's like a puzzle. Well, good luck. I will check back after I rewire the kitchen ceiling.

could be a hd going bad, idexing screwed up maybe run a utility to check the hd, how big is the hd and how much free space left , does it need defragged?
i have 7 of these running, although i just booted up my pc and haven't closed any uneeded programs yet, that comes after the email, forums and news
has anything new been added recently, did you just get a update for something, usually something has to change before something goes awry unless simply something is about to die
wow appears i have a problem too system idle process is using 99% of cpu, figures yet another thing to go wrong, guess maybe i will frag a bit that should take care of it

I installed an old CD writer a few weeks ago so after Jeff's post I thought that would be it. I disconected that, but no joy.
Hmm, if I try to open Quicktime viewer, SVChost legs it up to 80% or more. Or even using the Start menu can do it for a few seconds - but that might be normal?
Anyway, so I started a full defrag last night, and it was still running this morning. I'll see how it's got on when I get home later.
wow sounds like you needed a defrag or it's hung, how many sticks of ram aew in the pc if more than one then try one at a time until problem occurs, unless all is well after the pc is done fraggin err i mean defraggin
If the MS defrag fails to complete, there are free defrag utilities that are better and they will finish the job. It's been too long since I have used one but google will turn one up.
if it failed run it again maybe restart first, many reason why it can fail, could even be bad sectors on drive, just added ram could be the culrpit, not all ram is compatible with each other, specs may be the same on 2 sticks but they just won't work well together, i had same problem awhile back, best when adding ram is to buy same brand at same time so you know there isn't going to be conflicts, i would start right at the ram idea take the one out you just added an try it
