OK, so here comes the stupid question:
What is the exact definition of spawnfragging and what are the unwritten rules of engagement about it? Various Nasty Clanners will occasionally say "I hate spawnfraggers!" or some such and I just type in something erudite and intelligent sounding like, "Yeah" or "Me 2" . Enlighten me, oh Nasty Ones!!
Controlling a map (or area of a map) by continually railing/shooting at known spawn points to score easy kills.
Known problem maps are Q3DM1 (at the Alien mouth) and the obvious respawn nightmare map Q3DM17 (although many of the small maps suffer the same problem).
Now if done 'correctly' spawnfragging still requires some excellent shooting and can in fact look quite impressive. However - please let me stress... that it gets on peoples nerves!
DM17 is the real problem map (particularly in 1v1 or Tourney mode - more on this later)
There are only 1 or 2 safe areas on this map (not really VERY safe... but safe-ish) On the top tear and under the top tear. From the top tear you can see all but 2? (if I remember correctly? I'm typing this from memory) of the 7 or 8 spawn points.
Shooting from these areas without moving (camping) and taking control of the map is 'Spawnfragging'.
During the respawn process you are surrounded by a yellow glow and for a second - you can't shoot - but they can shoot you. Couple that with the fact you need to collect your bearings.
It's very frustrating especially in a 1v1 match - being on the receiving end isn't pleasant.
From there you get several 'watered-down' versions of the same thing. Personally I don't mind it so much if the person is moving around - especially in a confined space like the room I mentioned in DM1 - the player is there to be shot. However it's pretty lame in a 1v1 and each player will have his own feelings on this.
Generally the busier the server - the easier it is to rack up scores with spawn frags.
It must be pointed out that this was foreseen by Carmack and his crew when designing Q3. If you watch your health when you spawn you start with 125 and over a few seconds it works down to 100. This was to cancel out campers watching respawn points and gives you just enough to avoid a rail attack - the reload time of the rail in vanilla Q3 should give players a fighting chance to get away. The railgun is not an instant kill weapon in the original Q3 and it's harder to camp spots using another weapon.
On the release of Team Arena (official mod) the distance you could shoot with the rail gun was limited (not too everyone's approval) This was to stop campers and spawnfraggers cranking their zoom to the full (in console) hiding in the hills and scoring cheap frags on the massive Terra maps in the game (as well as stopping flag carriers in their tracks).
The mod we play -Insta- is obviously the worst offender. You couldn't spawnfrag with the same effect in the original game. In other mods you start with a grace period - invulnerability which allows you back into the game. Like all things - if you mess with the rules then there are consequences. Spawnfragging is 1 of them in insta.
While I'm on about such things another distasteful tactic I DETEST is... when in a firefight with someone they bring up their chat-bubble and you skip along breaking off the fight... THEN before you've turned the first corner they've railed you in the back.
In my opinion this is the most bloody annoying cheap frag tactic in the game and I HATE IT!!! Grrrr
and it happens.
Chat fragging is annoying but can happen by accident easily - my take on it is, if I get chat-fragged it's usually my fault for talking during the game - we all do it. What's annoying is if it happens persistently.
In a perfect world players would give each other a sporting chance to get back into the game...
I'm sure the clan has some rules on the subject and people have their own opinions - I've heard people complaining in-game about things that don't bother me so much - perhaps others want to air their feelings here?
I forgot. Another known tactic on DM17 is to railjump off the pads high into space and pick off SPAWN POINTS - although again requiring acurate shooting - this is every bit as bad.

....only we call it Tylering or doing a Tyler or being Tylered; after Jeffs son Tyler who thought it was great fun when allowed to play when he was 6(?)

Always Searching For Knowledge Katana
Hello, I'm new here. I like politeness, but if everyone is in agreement I'll try to play either way. (I think it's cheap, but have seen much better players do it. Also though it looked as if in a fair-fight they would still get the frag)
