ok, first off... I really am no computer whizz, so i may be a million miles out with anything i post here ;D
Is the problem only happening when you run quake? or does it happen when you run other apps on your pooter? It could be that your vid card or cpu is overheating causing the restart... have you checked that all your fans are working correctly? (i have a system monitoring prog on my box that tells me approx fan speeds and system temps) Have you always had this problem or has it started happening recently? What spec system are you running? If the problem happens for no reason, regardless of whether you are playing quake or not, i.e random restarts, have you tried a virus scan?
If it wasn't for the last minute, nothing would ever get done
I've ran a few times virus scans, spyware removers, etc. ( Virus scans with all different kinds of virus scans ) It started happening a while ago, let's say about 2 or 3 months ago... It only happens with Quake, GTA and Need For Speed Underground...Where did you get that system monitoring prog? ???Spec system???

Judging by the fact that it only happens when you play games, it sounds like either your gfx gard or cpu are getting too hot under the load... or could even be on the way out, in which case they may need replacing My system monitor came on my motherboard cd so i have no idea where you can find one unfortunately Check your fans first... poke your finger in the vent, if it doesn't hurt then the fan not working (joke)... just have a look to see if they are spinning or feel if they are blowing air out. This sounds like a definate hardware problem to me, not a problem with your software. What system do you have? If it has been overclocked it will heat up a lot more, necessitating adequate cooling.
If it wasn't for the last minute, nothing would ever get done
System? you mean wut kinda comp? Pentuim 4 CPU 2.40 GHz, Timespeed 2.40 GHz, z56 MB RAM-Memory, Windows XP Home Version 2002 Service Pack 1... Hope I translated it all good enough for you

I don't think updating your windows xp patches will help, but for the love of god you should be keeping these up to date anyway! Especially if you have an "always on" connection i.e cable/dsl, theres a lot of nasty boogers out there just waiting to exploit any unpatched security vulnerabilities in your system.... please please pleeeeease tell me you have a hardware or software firewall installed. I doubt very much if erasing your hard drive will help at all, like i said, i think this is a problem with your hardware not any of the software you have That aside, back to your original problem... you never did say if your fans were working ok? Make sure they're not all clogged up with dust and the like or obstructed in any way. Try downloading one of the system monitors from the links in the link i posted... (damn that sounds confusing) or search in your favourite search engine for one, that way you can see just how hot your system is running... i still think this is the most likely problem, seeings as you get no restarts when your computer is sitting idle. What make and model mobo do you have? Just being nosey ;D
If it wasn't for the last minute, nothing would ever get done
!!!LOL!!! When I was checking the rear end of the computer I couldn't see the rosters, Both 2 were hiding under grey dust, the computer sound different now...It sounds more like a computer now:P

I have found over time that a random reboot either means "as Hoody said" heat, RAM, or a bad power supply. Generally, a vid card issue would just lock you up. What is your heat protection set at in your bios? As you play games, the box is screaming, running hot and fast. If you have it set that it will reboot at a certain temp, and your box is dirty, could be a problem. Heatsinks are sometimes an issue with this if they are not clean, or not working. Well, is the issue solved yet? I hope so. I have a random reboot on my box.... event viewer claims that I hit ctrl-alt- del, of course I didn't. I do believe I need a new power supply. I have lots of fans and goodies, I think I am asking too much from the ol' 370 watter. Take care.

Wet cloths, electronics and electricity generally make for a very nasty combination.... get yourself a nice air duster, can of compressed air, just right for blowing all that dust out of hard to reach places. I suck it all up with a vacuum cleaner too, and the dust ;D
If it wasn't for the last minute, nothing would ever get done
Can't I just go inside with my hand a whipe it all off the things and put the computer on its side and shake like hell so that all the dust will fall out??? Maybe strange question but was the 1st thing that came up in my head ;D
or, a vac with a long bristled brush will work...static is bad though. Here's my suggestion.... grab a tin cup, dark glasses, stand on a street corner, people will throw change- then GO BUY SOME AIR! lol. ( don't hold a sign saying: [glow=red,2,300]in need of money for blow job[/glow]....... I tried that, turned out bad....
